The most formal of the markets, ‘The Vic’ is a two-story building famous for its Indian spices, incense, fabrics, and curios. It is a popular stop for tourists looking for souvenirs and intense flavors.
History & Context
The original Victoria Street Market opened in 1910 but was tragically destroyed by a fire in 1973. For nearly two decades, the site remained empty until the current building was constructed in 1990. The architecture mimics the style of a Maharajah’s palace, paying homage to the city’s large Indian population, many of whom are descendants of indentured laborers who arrived in the 1860s. It stands as a monument to the enduring cultural footprint of the Indian community in Durban.
